iMessage link preview: tags, image size and cache refresh
Crawler: facebookexternalhit/1.1 Facebot Twitterbot/1.0 (as sent by Apple's LinkPresentation)
Apple's Messages app builds rich links with the LinkPresentation framework, usually on the sender's device. It uses og:title, og:image (or og:video) and the site icon (apple-touch-icon or favicon).
Tips
- Provide
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/apple-touch-icon.png">(180×180) for a crisp icon. - If og:image is missing, Messages may show just the icon and title.
- The user agent string imitates Facebook and Twitter crawlers, so allowing those also helps iMessage.
Minimum tags that work everywhere
<meta property="og:title" content="Page title"> <meta property="og:description" content="One or two sentences."> <meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/og/page.png"> <meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/page"> <meta property="og:type" content="website"> <meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
Paste your URL into the previewer to see an approximate iMessage card and a list of problems.
