WhatsApp link preview: tags, image size and cache refresh
Crawler: WhatsApp/2.x
WhatsApp uses og:title, og:description and og:image. Previews are generated when the link is typed or pasted, so if the page is slow or the image is heavy, users may get no preview.
Tips
- Keep og:image small: a compressed JPEG of a few hundred KB loads most reliably.
- Use an absolute https URL.
- There's no refresh tool. Changes show up for new shares after WhatsApp's cache expires, or immediately with a variant URL.
Minimum tags that work everywhere
<meta property="og:title" content="Page title"> <meta property="og:description" content="One or two sentences."> <meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/og/page.png"> <meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/page"> <meta property="og:type" content="website"> <meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
Paste your URL into the previewer to see an approximate WhatsApp card and a list of problems.
